IN THE BEGINNING………..

The ARK was formulated in 2013 by myself Valerie Carter [Founder & Administrator] of 1800MUMMYS after speaking with over 100 ladies in the Bribie and Sunshine Coast areas. Most of the ladies were struggling with loneliness, anxiety, empty nest, grief or just wanting fun and adventure.

The SHED a men’s group was showing great success, so i decided i would establish something similar. My back ground was events management and charity work so running such a group was definitely something i was comfortable with.

The first meeting was to take place on 25/2/13 however Bribie decided to have heavy rain falls on the day. I still had the meeting however i conducted it over the phone ringing ladies that hard previously showed interest. At the following gatherings, which at the time was only at Bribie, we discussed lots of topics and social things to do for the coming months. Such as :- Picnics, movies, luncheons, walking groups, river boat cruise, bus trips, seeing shows in Brisbane, social things available in the area. Some ladies expressed they wanted to give back to the community by doing charity work, raising funds for the less fortunate, helping young mums and so on. In the last 3 years we have collected pre-loved items and donated them to women’s and children’s refuge such as Sunny Kids and Sonshine Sanctuary on the Sunshine Coast.

In late 2014 my mother’s health was failing, so i returned to the coast to care for her full time. Thankfully one of our lovely ARK ladies Joanne offered to run the Bribie group, until sadly she had to leave to care for her family in NSW. As i was now living on Sunshine Coast i started a group at Buderim Lions Park. This group attracted a younger group of women some with young children. We commenced a Sunday Fun Day once a month for our single mums. Mums and kids had so much fun interacting, playing games and sharing in a sausage sizzle. Sadly due to ill health again i was unable to continue running the group. I was disappointed as it bought great joy to the families and myself. I was able to utilize my teacher-aide skills especially in the area of hyperactivity in children. The parents were grateful of all the tips and strategies we were able to share.

In 2015 i started the ARK group in Nambour Quota Park, it was slow to start off, however it is slowly growing. I find many ladies are keen when we speak on the phone, however some do not always make it to the gatherings. Many are going through very difficult times and leaving their homes can be a challenge. I can relate to this as i too struggle with a rare anxiety condition called CCR [catatonic conversion reaction] very few medical professionals are familiar with it. Living with it however can be very debilitating, even to talk about it is difficult as we live in such judgmental and ignorant times.

We ladies tend to suffer in silence, we do not want to be a burden on our loved ones, family, friends or society and yet however, we forget we have cared for so many all our lives. The majority of women 50 and over have lived in an era where to think of oneself first was selfish, you were judged by other women, our partner, family and society. The women i speak too are such giving, warm, loving, caring women of whom a few sadly still believe they would do everyone a favour by committing suicide. My question to the community is, how did we let it get to this?????

The ARK stands for ACTS OF RANDOM KINDNESS and that is what we at the ARK do!

Come along. its much better to laugh and cry together than alone!

If you or someone you know could benefit by coming along to one of our groups. please call me directly. I am available by mobile 0427485970 from 8 – 8 / 7 days a week.
